Hearing loss is a terrifying proposition for anyone. But for the 5 percent of the world’s population with disabling hearing loss, it is a reality. Hearing loss can isolate people from their environment and is linked to decreased employment and social difficulties. There are many causes behind hearing degradation, but it is often progressive with age. Current mainstream treatment involves bulky hearing aids or surgery. However, chiropractic intervention has been shown to successfully restore hearing for some individuals with certain hearing loss types.
Why Hearing Loss Occurs
Loss of hearing can occur at a range of ages, from birth to the elder years, for just as many reasons. Genetics, infections, ear or head trauma, loud sounds, nutritional deficiencies, smoking, and chronic disease can all play a role in hearing loss. Spinal injuries or subluxations in the upper neck may also magnify or even be the root cause in some hearing loss cases. This type of hearing loss, called cervical hearing disorder, is caused due to disruptions of the ear vessels or nerves that source from the spine. If one’s hearing problems are the result of this cervical damage, it may be treatable (or even reversible) with chiropractic care.
